LiveWire

💃 This February, LiveWire presents The Burying Ground, coming to grace the stage with some ‘20s/30s style foot-tapping blues!

Woody Forster - Guitar, Vocals
Devora Laye - Washboard, Saw, Vocals
Bonnie Northgraves - Trumpet
Joseph Lubinsky-Mast - Bass

"Authentically delivered, rustic old-timey, country blues, and swinging jazz flecked, folk music... I will look forward to anything The Burying Ground offer up from here on in. While they may be devoted to the precious music of a long gone golden era, they still have an awful lot to offer the present and future, as music this good is evidently timeless."
--David Morrison, Folk Radio UK

You don’t have to dance to come and enjoy the music, but beginner dancers are always welcome to join the fun! No partner required, and make sure you come for the lesson at 8:00.

The Anza is a 19+ venue with beer and a nice wooden dance floor and comfy booths to sit in. Wear whatever shoes you’d like to dance in - no bare feet or socks.

7:30 - Doors are open!
8:00 - Dance Practica hosted by Michael Bean
8:00 - First-Timer Beginner lesson by Bex Winnick
9:00 - 11:30: Dance with the Burying Ground!

The evening will start with a dance practica. During the practica we circle up and share our names, some stretches, and intentions about what we’d like to learn in our dancing. Then the floor will open for dancers of all levels to mingle, practice, and share moves and concepts that they’re working on.

During the practica, Bex will take aside a small group of the first-time fusion dancers and introduce you to the basics!

Price: $12 to $20
Pay-what-you-can
Cash only (ATM at venue)

Or get in FREE by volunteering 1 hour at the door. Sign up at the volunteering post in the discussion below!

Extra money we bring in will be used to hire more inspiring musicians for future events, and to help pay DJs and organizers.

Pi Theatre presents: Lady Parts

For the 2017-2018 season, Pi is introducing our new series, Pi Provocateurs: Political Performance in Unconventional Spaces! As part of this new series, we will be presenting After Party Theatre's Lady Parts!

Co-creators Katey Hoffman and Cheyenne Mabberley describe Lady Parts as "Broad City meets SNL when it was still good meets those uncomfortable sex-ed videos they make you watch in grade 6." Through satirical sketch and true life stories, Lady Parts exposes and criticizes the very real and very problematic treatment of 50% of our population, from large scale misogyny to the day to day minutia of our existence.

Through four episodes spread out over the next year, Katey and Cheyenne will explore what it's like to be a woman today. Expect evenings of intimacy and vulnerability contrasted with sharp, cutting and unapologetic comedy. #IGotLaydAtLadyParts

And Episodes 3 and 4 at the Anza Club at 3 West 8th Avenue on:
Episode 3 "HEART" - April 12th, 2018 - ON SALE NOW
Episode 4 "VAGINA" - May 31st, 2018 - ON SALE SOON!

The Guitar Cabaret

The ANZA Club presents:

In conjunction with Vancouver Craft Beer Week, The ANZA Club Presents: The Guitar Cabaret with host Paul Pigat and very special guest, Steve Pineo. Tickets are $15 and are available in advance at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3411820 19+

The ANZA Club is thrilled to present The Guitar Cabraret series with host, the internationally-reknowned singer songwriter and guitaist Paul Pigat. The Guitar Cabaret pairs local guitar virtuoso and host Paul Pigat with a wide range of guitar-slinging guests.

Paul Pigat has a robust and diverse career. Best known as the frontman and blistering guitarist for the rockabilly band Cousin Harley, Pigat also has a wide breadth of projects from jazz to roots to blues, most notably The Paul Pigat Trio and Boxcar Campfire. Paul’s solo guitar performances showcase the entire range of his work and never ceases to amaze and dazzle audiences and fans around the world. However impressive the list of credits he's compiled over the last few years has been — earned by supporting artists such as Neko Case, Jim Byrnes, Michael Kaeshammer and Carolyn Mark and opening for such acts as the Blind Boys of Alabama and The Stray Cats — it's when you get to hear Paul on his own that his star really shines.
www.paulpigat.com

Steve Pineo is a multifaceted guitarist, singer songwriter. A thirty year musical veteran, his shows are fast-paced and entertaining, and they take you to unexpected places.
The songs Steve has written have been covered by artists such as Paul Brand (Canadian Man) and Prairie Oyster (Too Bad For Me). Steve had five solo CDs and appears on the legendary recordings by the Co Dependants, featuring the late, great Billy Cowsill. Steve performs solo, as well an acoustic trio, an electric blues band, a six-piece New Orleans Rhythm and Blues Revue called Trick Bag and a five-piece vintage jazz ensemble called Prohibition Hall. His annual Christmas shows consistently sell out week-long runs and he has toured Alberta with The Heebee Jeebies in his loving tribute to Elvis. Not surprisingly, Steve's musical influences are vast and include blues, jazz, vintage rock and roll, country and western, soul, gospel and world music.

New Album from Vancouver’s Black Gardenia:
Lucky Star
CD Release Fall/Winter 2017
BlackGardenia is a different kind of vintage jazz band. Their exploration of the mysterious place where jazz, blues, folk and old country meet has yielded a sound that takes listeners to a time and place where cool was always classy and noir was the norm.
The band’s forthcoming second album, Lucky Star, blends reinterpreted classics with vintage-inspired originals, with an all-star line-up of musical talent refining their distinct sound to deliver their finest work yet.
“For this record we wanted to honour the music we love,” explains bandleader and vocalist Daphne Roubini. “We were excited to mix a bit of Django Reinhardt and Hot Club de France, T-Bone Walker, jazz swing, and our country and folk favourites. These songs came together during our weekly residency in English Bay. Our band would change slightly every week and I became fascinated by how a different bass player or guitarist, or whether we had a trumpet or violin as the feature instrument, would influence the interpretation of the song. Every person playing with us would change the entire sound of our set list. It reminded me of how different the sea looks everyday. It’s the same view yet so different. We love exploring these transient moments and wanted to capture that on this record!”
Black Gardenia’s musical pedigree speaks for itself. In her roles as leader of the band, half of acclaimed ukulele duo Ruby & Smith, and founder of Ruby’s Ukes, the world’s largest ukulele school outside Hawaii, Daphne has been profiled on CBC radio, on Shaw TV and The Province, Vancouver Sun, Georgia Straight, Ukulele Magazine, and the Vancouver Courier. On Lucky Star her captivating vocals have been paired with the talents of her musical (and life) partner, guitarist Andrew Smith, along with stellar musicians including Chris Davis (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings), Paul Pigat (Cousin Harley), Stephen Nikleva and Jimmy Roy (Ray Condo and the Ricochets and Petunia and the Vipers), Cameron Wilson and Brent Gubbels (VanDjango), and Patrick Metzger (Headwater, Viper Central).
“When Chris Davis agreed to co-produce Lucky Star with me we sat down and picked the songs that really stood out to us, then specifically chose the musicians we wanted to would play on each song,” continues Daphne. “It was an amazing experience to pick the sound and version we wanted first, and then orchestrate those musicians for the sessions. We found we heard things in the same way, which was quite magical.
“For me, Lucky Star is the perfect musical cocktail. I’ll have mine vintage with a twist!”
