Geeks versus Nerds
Feb

7:00 PM19:00

Geeks versus Nerds

Geeks versus Nerds is here on Canada's West Coast and we've taken up the mantle of celebrating our local geek, gamer, and comic book nerd subcultures right here in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia. Every month, we pit fan-favourite pop culture icons against each other in a battle royale of wit, hilarity, and memorable one-liners. Each two hour show features two debates: an Opener Debate - which usually pits two less-well-known or retro characters against each other, and a Headliner Debate - which usually features two behemoths of pop culture vying for glory. Each character is represented by a team of three (Team Geeks or Team Nerds) that argue for their candidate's right to hold the title. At the end of each debate, the audience determines the winner by round of applause, and to the winning team goes the "Chalice of Victory".

Climbing Mexico's Highest Mountains

Climbing Mexico's Highest Mountains

When Steven Levkin, Taylor Livingston and Richard Carey set off to climb three of Mexico’s highest mountains, they had no idea how many difficulties they would need to face. As novice climbers and amateur filmmakers, this expedition became a true adventure forcing them far out of their comfort zones and pushing the team to its limit.

Along with a screening of their film, Forever Upwards: Mexico, these climbers will speak of major factors that were difficult to portray in the film. Corrupted video files, snot-freezing windchill and navigating the unknown. These are only a few of the many unexpected challenges this team needed to overcome while climbing Pico de Orizaba, North America’s third highest mountain.

Clever and literate, Berner’s songs can make you want to weep, laugh, grind your teeth, or kick out a window-often all at the same time.

Psychedelic Solstice Party

Image artwork by Simon Haiduk www.simonhaiduk.com

A group of volunteers from the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) Canada is hosting a Psychedelic Solstice Party with the aim of bringing together the larger community of individuals and organizations who support the safe and legal use of psychedelic medicine for an evening of intentional community building, networking, knowledge sharing, games, music, and celebration!

Local organizations that promote psychedelic research, plant medicine, and harm reduction will have the first opportunity to purchase tickets before we promote public sales.

The event will be catered with a selection of hot and cold appetizers including vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. There will be a psychedelic trivia contest with prizes, and interactive displays including a henna-painting station! (See full schedule below).

A cash bar service will be provided courtesy of our fabulous hosts at the Anza Club.

This is a non-profit event and tickets are priced at cost. The evening is not about making money, it is about bringing people together to help change the world!

The following is a tentative schedule for the evening:

6:00pm - 7:00pm: Opening ceremony, assorted appetizers, meet and greet, live music by Iven, performance by Joy, grounding ceremony.
7:00pm - 8:00pm: Playshop exercise led by Vince.
8:00pm - 8:30pm: Psychedelic Trivia contest with prizes.
8:00pm - 9:00pm: Talks/presentations/performances. "Shine A Light" open mic: share your thoughts on psychedelic medicine, and an opportunity for live performances from the audience.
9:00pm - 10:30pm: Live performances and music.
10:30pm - 1:30am: DJ music & dancing.
1:30am: Last call for drinks.
2:00am: Done and dusted.

This is a participatory event and everyone who is interested will have a chance to share their thoughts and feelings about what psychedelics mean to them and what role they think legalizing psychedelic medicine could play in society.

We hope you can join us for what will surely be an unforgettable evening filled with meaningful connections. Dress however you feel comfortable, from casual to psychedelic to classy, and everything in between! This is a safe space! Let us know if you need any special accommodations (especially in regard to mobility as the Anza Club has stairs) and we will do our best to support you.

This event is generously sponsored by the wonderful team at Nature's Entourage: https://naturesentourage.ca/

Can't wait to see you there!

Love,
Toj.

praise for Black Gardenia~
“Daphne Roubini's original tunes bring to mind Django Reinhardt’s Gypsy Jazz with Billie Holiday as vocalist.” Vancouver Sun

“This Jazz/country/folk/blues band filter everything they do through their own special musical time capsule.”North Shore News

“The musical equivalent of taking a bath in a barrel of finely aged
bourbon.” Robert Collins, CTV BC

“Black Gardenia features the evocative vocalist Daphne Roubini, who sounds at once retro – think Billie Holiday and Madeleine Peyroux – and yet cheekily modern and on trend.” Georgia Mancio, ReVoice! Festival, London, UK.

“A relaxed approach to old school jazz with tinges of blues, country, and western swing, with very fine vocals from Daphne Roubini, and some of the hippest Ukulele that you can hope to hear.”
Ken Pickering, TD Vancouver Intl Jazz Festival

Black Gardenia line-up features
Musicians and instrumentation:
Daphne Roubini ~ Voice & Ukulele
Andrew Smith ~ Guitar & Ukulele
Stephen Nikleva ~ Guitar
Brent Gubbels ~ Bass
Guest solo-ist to be announced

Full Press Reviews:
Fresh and Local: Georgia Straight
"Black Gardenia's sophomore effort is built on a brave idea. Mixing jazz and blues standards with a number of original tracks, the record could have easily been a mismatch of quality. Band leader Daphne Roubini, however, makes sure that's not a possibility. Lending her Billie Holiday-esque lilt to classics like T-Bone Walker's gruff 'I'm just waiting' for your call" and adding a folk twist to "You'd be so nice to come home to", Roubini expertly ties the covers together with her rich velvety vocals. Transporting listeners
back to a time of martinis, lounge suits, and hazy cigarette smoke. all with an audio clarity that eludes remastered editions of jazz classics. Black Gardenia offers authoritative modern versions of those staples. The fact that Roubini's originals are indistinguishable among the stacked line-up is the
biggest compliment of all."

Black Gardenia: Lucky Star | Stuart Derdeyn (The Province, Edmonton Journal,
Montreal Gazette, The Vancouver Sun, Ottawa Herald, and Regina Leader.)
“Mining the music of an era that just keeps on delivering, Vancouver
quintet Black Gardenia features the marvellously jazzy vocals of
singer/ukulele ace Daphne Roubini and her life partner guitarist Andrew Smith leading an A-team of local players through less-familiar tunes from the canon by the likes of T-Bone Walker (I’m Just Waitin’ for Your Call) or Hoagy Carmichael and Ned Washington (The Nearness of You), as well as a few
originals. Where many groups that mine this well can be too reverential, this group manages to show respect for the music without being too reverent. Roubini has a lovely Jo Stafford-esque set of pipes and with the combined guitar skills of Smith, Cousin Harley’s Paul Pigat, Stephen Nikleva and Jimmy Roy (Petunia and the Vipers), as well as violinist Cameron Wilson and
bassist Brent Gubbels (Van Django) and Patrick Metzger, the group is assured lots of swinging interplay. But the one who really gives the material the extra oomph is trumpeter Chris Davis whose inspired and subtle blowing just colours the set with the kind of warm quality that makes you want a good cocktail, an intimate cabaret and a tux. New Album from Vancouver’s Black Gardenia:
Lucky Star
CD Release Fall/Winter 2017

BlackGardenia is a different kind of vintage jazz band. Their exploration of the mysterious place where jazz, blues, folk and old country meet has yielded a sound that takes listeners to a time and place where cool was always classy and noir was the norm.

The band’s forthcoming second album, Lucky Star, blends reinterpreted classics with vintage-inspired originals, with an all-star line-up of musical talent refining their distinct sound to deliver their finest work yet.

“For this record we wanted to honour the music we love,” explains
bandleader and vocalist Daphne Roubini. “We were excited to mix a bit of Django Reinhardt and Hot Club de France, T-Bone Walker, jazz swing, and our country and folk favourites. These songs came together during our weekly residency in English Bay. Our band would change slightly every week and I became fascinated by how a different bass player or guitarist, or whether we had a trumpet or violin as the feature instrument, would influence the
interpretation of the song. Every person playing with us would change the entire sound of our set list. It reminded me of how different the sea looks everyday. It’s the same view yet so different. We love exploring these transient moments and wanted to capture that on this record!”

Black Gardenia’s musical pedigree speaks for itself. In her roles as leader of the band, half of acclaimed ukulele duo Ruby & Smith, and founder of Ruby’s Ukes, the world’s largest ukulele school outside Hawaii, Daphne has been profiled on CBC radio, on Shaw TV and The Province, Vancouver Sun, Georgia Straight, Ukulele Magazine, and the Vancouver Courier. On Lucky Star
her captivating vocals have been paired with the talents of her musical (and life) partner, guitarist Andrew Smith, along with stellar musicians including Chris Davis (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Jean Batiste, The Late show), Paul Pigat (Cousin Harley), Stephen Nikleva and Jimmy Roy (Ray Condo and the Ricochets and Petunia and the Vipers), Cameron Wilson and Brent Gubbels
(VanDjango), and Patrick Metzger (Headwater, Viper Central).

“When Chris Davis agreed to co-produce Lucky Star with me we sat down and picked the songs that really stood out to us, then specifically chose the musicians we wanted to would play on each song,” continues Daphne. “It was an amazing experience to pick the sound and version we wanted first, and then orchestrate those musicians for the sessions. We found we heard things
in the same way, which was quite magical.“For me, Lucky Star is the perfect musical cocktail. I’ll have mine vintage with a twist!”

What is a Listening Party?

Our listening party series is a monthly gathering where we come together in a casual setting to listen to music which has been submitted by local artists leading up to the event. Each event we gain knowledge from a keynote speaker on a range of topics relevant to pushing the music scene forward in Vancouver. These events are informal affairs, not simply for producers, but anyone who enjoys and appreciates local music.

What Is Groundwerk?

Groundwerk Vancouver is a group of electronic music enthusiasts passionate about showcasing local arts and nurturing community. Our goal is to host events that serve as a hub for our community to grow by encouraging creativity, sharing knowledge, creating mentorships and fostering new connections between both newcomers and veterans in Vancouver's music scene.
