DigiBC & VSG's Rock•Paper•Scissors Tournament + Networking Mixer

Our next event is a networking mixer in collaboration with Vancouver Social Games (VSG). We'll be putting on another classic, head-to-head tournament of none other than Rock Paper Scissors... with a bit of standup comedy from the hosts! The last one we did in February was such a blast so we decided to do it all over again. It's quite a fun event with lots of audience participation and networking before and after the tournament.

If you think you have an exceptional strategy or secret game plan you want to put to the test then come out and try your hand! This will also be a great opportunity for members of the creative tech sector (animation, video games, VFX, VR/AR/MR) to meet and get to know one another.

The event will be taking place at the ANZA Club (Vancouver’s favourite, one-of-a-kind social club and watering hole) and will be hosted by Scott Patey and friends (aka PayDay Productions comedians). The 'Rock, Paper, Corduroy' night they established back in 2011 has turned into one of the city’s most epic events! Scott is a professional actor and improviser with 15+ years of experience.

Geeks versus Nerds

NOTE: Doors open at 6pm, show starts at 7pm! Get there early if you wanna calls dibs on good seats. This venue is 19+, sorry minors!

What started in the East is ending in the West! It's been a long, crazy journey, but this cross-Canada cavalcade of comedy has finally come to it's finale. So come on out and celebrate the seven years of this show with our final debate: EAST MEETS WEST!

Opener - Will it be a true robopocalypse? Or a robotopia? The answer my lay with the winner of this opening debate. It's laser blasts and blasts from the past! Android 18 vs Dolores Abernathy: "Which android's humanity is a greater asset?"

Headliner - Magic powers + teenage angst = pure gold!! Whether it's the marvellous magical world of Harry Potter, or the wonderful weeb world of Naruto, one thing remains the same: being a teenager ain't easy. Especially when you have immense untapped power within you, and have a creepy dude obsessed with snakes trying to kill you. It's Harry Potter vs Naruto: "Which cursed, orphaned magic-child best overcame their troubled teen years?"

Keep an eye on this Facebook event and our other social media channels (Twitter, Instagram) for updates regarding Tickets, and Contests!!

Saki Kaskas - Theodosius - Album Release Party

Saki Kaskas - Theodosius - Album Release Party

As some of you may know, a bunch of Saki's friends, family, and myself have been working over the last couple of years to complete Saki's unfinished album. It's taken a lot longer than I expected, but I'm happy to say it's close to being done. I thought I should start organising the release party now so that there's lots of time to let everyone know.

This is a public event, everyone is invited. Please invite anyone you think might enjoy it. The more people the better! There's no live music, as I'd like the focus to be on Saki's album.

It will be held on June 28th at The ANZA Club Hall in Vancouver, as this is where Saki played his first gig. Doors open at 7pm and I'll do a presentation at 8pm and play the album (probably a few times).

The album will be released on all the usual places (iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp etc). At the moment it looks like it will have 12 songs on it. Musical styles on it range from heavy metal, pop rock, to disco funk and even some classical. It's as musically diverse as Saki was.

Here's a list of everyone who has contributed to the project...

Jeff van Dyck (Co-writing, Engineering and Production)
Steve Royea (Engineering)
Marc Charalambos (Bass & Use of his studio)
Chris Retru (Drums)
Joey Sather (Vocals and Lyrics)
Johannes Grames (Guitars)
Amos Resnick (Drums)
Robin Steen (Bass, Vocals and Lyrics)
Jason Michas (Vocals & Lyrics)
Darren Sleno (Drums)
Todd Taylor (Guitars)
Shaun Trainer (Guitars, Vocals and Lyrics)

Angela van Dyck (Vocals and Lyrics)
Traz Damji (Brass arrangement)
Rashid Hille (Guitars and Production)
Sia Kaskas (Consulting)
Evie Katevatis (Graphics)
Rob Bailey (Mastering)
Rom di Prisco? (might be remixing)
Anton Gagarin (Remixing)

I will share more details as I get them, feel free to ask me questions here or privately.

Int'l Blues Music Day Concert: David Gogo Band//Matt Hoyles

Doors: 6:30pm | Showtime: 7:30pm.

19 + Event.

Vancouver Blues Around Town cordially invites you to celebrate the "Blues" on Int'l Blues Music Day.

Join us as we come together "To celebrate, promote, and preserve the rich legacy, tradition and future of the great American art form and international language known as blues music."

Headlining will be 2017 Maple Blues Award Winner, David Gogo and his band. Opening for David, is local Vancouver Blues Musician Matt Hoyles.
--------------
About David Gogo.

With the release of his fifteenth album 17 Vultures, bluesman David Gogo continues his blues rock crusade by pushing himself forward, yet again. Not that looking back on his career is a bad thing.

He has performed on stage with the likes of BB King, Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley, and Otis Rush. He has been chosen to open shows for ZZ Top, George Thorogood, The Tragically Hip, Little Feat, Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Cray, Robin Trower and Wishbone Ash. His songs are featured in films and television and have been covered by a variety of artists, most notably Buddy Guy.

David Gogo has six JUNO Award nominations, has been named Guitarist Of The Year three times at the Maple Blues Awards, was named Musician Of The Year at the West Coast Music Awards, won Blues Recording Of The Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards.

-----------------
About Matt Hoyles.

Gritty guitar, wailing harmonica, mad foot percussion and wickedly expressive vocals combine to create a unique rootsy sound that will get you stomping your feet and clapping your hands like there’s no tomorrow!

Hoyles is a compelling entertainer who leaves it all on stage! His musicianship as a guitarist is original, mesmerising and an unforgettable experience. Matt's debut album TIME was released in spring 2018 to a sold out crowd at Vancouver’s legendary Railway Club; and as Vancouver’s Permanent Rain Press states "Hoyles proves he can pack a lot into one song, let alone a whole album with Time, his passionate, gritty voice and unconventional mish-mash of blues and other elements making for a vibrant and soulful album”.

Vancouver Blues Around Town Presents Steve Hill & Special Guest Matt Hoyles.
---------------------
“The one-man band style has made Steve Hill the top star in the Canadian blues scene right now,” says Bob Mersereau of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

When it comes to one-man bands, guitarist and singer extraordinaire Steve Hill has no limits. Anything goes. He is the true exponent of aone-man band. Steve performs standing up while singing and playing
guitar, his feet playing bass drum, snare drum, hi-hats and with a drum stick fused to the head of his trusty guitar, any other percussion within reach.
Steve’s an overnight sensation that’s 20 years in the making. He’s an ambitious and raucous force to be reckoned with on the Canadian and international blues-rock scene. Now, he’s ready to break out
internationally.

Following the success of his JUNO nominated Solo Recordings Volume 1, which also won “Album of The Year” at the InternationalBlues Challenge in 2013, and JUNO Award winner Solo Recordings
Volume 2, Steve Hill first released his brand new album Solo Recordings Volume 3 in Canada on March 4, 2016.

Now, a year later, the album will finally be released domestically in the UK on Friday 6th
October 2017. One Man Blues Rock Band features originals that are outright rockers (Damned, Dangerous, Rhythm All Over, The Ballad of Jonny Wabo, Still Got It Bad to more acoustic-based melodic tracks (Emily) and three re-imagined and rearranged covers (Voodoo Child). The live album shows an artist at the top of his game.

It comes to no surprise why the Montreal Gazette has referred to Steve Hill as, “the meanest guitar player in Canada.”

“I wanted to capture a live album that featured all the energy of my live shows,” says Steve. There are no overdubs on this live album… I play everything myself in real time. There are no tapes or loops. What you hear is what you get.”

In January 2015, Steve was awarded four coveted Maple Blues Awards including Electric Act of the Year, Guitarist of the Year, Recording/Producer of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. Solo Recordings Volume 2 won the 2015 JUNO Award for Blues Album of the Year. Throughout his career, Steve has shared the stage with many of his musical heroes including Ray Charles, BB King, ZZ Top, Jimmie Vaughan, Hubert Sumlin, Jeff Beck and many others. Over the course of nine albums he’s explored everything from hard rock, country, and stoner rock to folk music while always incorporating the essence of his first love, the blues.

Steve’s reputation as an exciting performer has provided him the opportunity to showcase his talents at some of Canada’s biggest music festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest, Jazz Winnipeg Festival, Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, Kitchener Blues Festival and more. Steve Hill is clearly in his element as a solo artist and one-man band, inviting listeners into a world of musical madness in the form of blues and rock ‘n’ roll.

Rollaway - Modern Epic EP Release Party w/ Special Guest Square

Rollaway - Modern Epic EP Release Party w/ Special Guest Square

After a number of years spent adventuring with side projects and developing new material, Rollaway is back with a hefty new EP of original roots rock, jazz fusion, and modern Americana. “Modern Epic” is four songs exploring new musical directions – longer forms, intricate harmonic structures, mixed meters, modulations, improvisatory sections – while preserving aspects of the band’s classic four-part harmonies and epic poetic themes like forsaken love, mortality, and salvation. To celebrate this release, we’re throwing down with Bomber Brewing and local post-rock quartet Square at the Anza Club on Friday May 24th.

To accompany the release, Bomber Brewmaster Blair Calibaba and Rollaway drummer/Bomber Tasting Room Assistant Manager Max Marceau Ley are creating a unique craft brew designed specially for the “Modern Epic” sound. Offered at the release party as well as at the brewery tasting room for a limited time, the beer and EP go hand in hand, with a purchase of the one offering discounts on the other.

Join us at the Anza Club on Friday May 24th to enjoy some great local music and local beer, all created in the thriving indie scene that is East Van. Tickets $15 at the door or in advance at eventbrite.ca

ABOUT ROLLAWAY
The music of Rollaway has been described as “floor-stomping blues”, “backwoods-choir elegance” (The Georgia Straight) and “dirty-southern-gothic-rock-country-folk” (Discorder Magazine). Since founding the project in Atlanta, GA, Rollaway’s bandleader and songwriter Benton Roark has led the project across North America for over a decade (now Vancouver-based), releasing no fewer than four records and forging a sound that weds arcane poetry with roots rock, jazz fusion, and modern Americana.

The latest record featuring Roark’s work with members of Rollaway - 2016’s Deep in the Pocket, Still No Change - has been featured on CBC’s North by Northwest and was named CD of the Week by The Vancouver Sun, which described it as “heartfelt”, “magisterial”, and possessing “a relaxed funkiness”. Prior to that, Rollaway released The Return of the Lonesome Coyote Patchwork Pulpit, and Sundry Other Tales from the Rainbow’s End, garnering critical acclaim and inviting comparisons to classic acts like Dylan, Steely Dan, and The Band as well as younger ones like Fleet Foxes and Neko Case. Britain's Maverick Magazine called the tunes “tone poems in the style of My Morning Jacket,” whereas Vancouver's Georgia Straight wrote “if he keeps making records as good as this one, Roark is welcome to stay here as long as he likes.”

Rollaway is: Benton Roark (rhythm guitar, vocals), Adam Tryczynski (lead guitar, vocals), Jen Lewin (keyboards, vocals), Sarah Wolfman-Robichaud (vocals, percussion), Michael Vaughan (bass), and Max Marceau Ley (drums).

ABOUT SQUARE
Square is a modern-day band based in Vancouver that epitomizes the ethos of the Canadian middle-aged experience. Multicultural, overeducated, and ironically trying to justify art-making in our current (dis)information age. Square's music asks a unique question: what happens when you know all the rules and somehow still get lost? The answer to this question is laid out in songs that are powerful, complex, and uniquely wrought out, resulting not as an experiment of their combined musical lives but as a staunch statement of musical mastery. This fast-rising post-rock band is comprised of Nathan Dillon (bass/vocals), James Maxwell (drums), Alfredo Santa Ana (guitar), and Edward Top (guitar/violin/vocals).

What is a Listening Party?

Our listening party series is a monthly gathering where we come together in a casual setting to listen to music which has been submitted by local artists leading up to the event. Each event we gain knowledge from a keynote speaker on a range of topics relevant to pushing the music scene forward in Vancouver. These events are informal affairs, not simply for producers, but anyone who enjoys and appreciates local music.

What Is Groundwerk?

Groundwerk Vancouver is a group of electronic music enthusiasts passionate about showcasing local arts and nurturing community. Our goal is to host events that serve as a hub for our community to grow by encouraging creativity, sharing knowledge, creating mentorships and fostering new connections between both newcomers and veterans in Vancouver's music scene.

About Suzie Vinnick...
* 10X Canadian Maple Blues Award Winner*
* 3X Juno Nominee*
* Finalist, 2013 International Blues Challenge - Solo/Duo Category*

A Saskatoon native transplanted to the Niagara Region of Ontario, Roots and Blues singer Suzie Vinnick is a 3X Juno Nominee, CFMA Award winner, and a 10-time winner of the Maple Blues Award for songwriting, female vocalist, acoustic act and more. Suzie has a voice you’ve heard a thousand times and one you’ll never forget. It soars, it growls, it whispers and it shouts from a deep, deep well of emotion. The pure joy she exudes when she picks up that guitar is so worth the show.

Suzie has toured nationally with Stuart McLean’s The Vinyl Café, the John McDermott Band, and she has performed for Canadian Peacekeepers in Bosnia and the Persian Gulf. She was also the voice of Tim Horton’s for 5 years.

Suzie just released her latest album, a full band roots and blues extravaganza entitled Shake The Love Around.

“Warm, rich and emotional, Vinnick’s gorgeous vocals ring with confidence…”– Ottawa Citizen

“Serving up a set where it shows she’s a long way from getting jaded and losing her mojo, this girl most likely to…has more chops than the meat department at the Costco warehouse. Blues, folk, rock? She’s got a toe in all those waters and handles them all with the ease of wrapping them around her little finger. A real blast of fresh air, this set hit’s the target every timeout. Killer stuff throughout.” – Midwest Record.
